”MODEVITE denounces that the government is imposing this infrastructure project through harassment, conditioning the delivery of social programs like Sembrando Vida (Sowing Life), threatening to deploy the elite State Police unit known as the Pakal Immediate Reaction Force (FRIP), and various other forms of manipulation.”
On June 18th, the Secretary for the Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, signed an agreement to promote equitable and sustainable mining in Mexico. The Cambiémosla Ya collective responded by saying that ”There is no sustainable mining, nor can there be equitable benefit sharing without the participation and consent of the communities, who own the territories where the minerals are found. ”
The way is being paved for the controversial highway with lack of information and proper consultation with the communities involved. It will pass through seven environmentally protected areas. Contrary to government claims that its aim is to bring tourism to the state, affected communities believe the real purpose is to facilitate mining projects.
