Since 2021, Schools for Chiapas has encouraged dedicated volunteers to live and learn in communities in resistance in Chiapas. We continue working closely with Fray Bartolomé de las Casas Center for Human Rights to place human rights observers in threatened communities.

In 2023, conflicts in Chiapas have flared, which threaten daily activities, livelihoods, well-being and autonomy. Throughout the state, narco paramilitary violence is on the rise and thriving in impunity with the complicity of the State. Simultaneously, the State deploys counterinsurgency programs which sow division and dispossession. The sum of factors amounts to a war of attrition against communities in resistance.

Maintaining volunteers for the BriCO are one of our a highest priorities! We are so tremendously grateful to those who want to give of their time!

Here is one testimony from a BriCO volunteer in 2021.

If you are interested in fullfilling this vital role, we are eager to help you meet the necessary requirements. Volunteering as a BriCO requires a minimum commitment of 16 days, including a two-day training in San Cristóbal. You must be fluent in Spanish speaking and comprehension. If you are interested, please fill-out our travel application, at which point we reach out to you to help you receive the information/and complete the preparations for your stay.

What to bring to Chiapas: A stay in the observation camps are quite like camping, and while you won’t need a tent, here are some tips on what to bring to Chiapas.

Thank you for your commitment to Human Rights in the communities in resistance in Chiapas!

*Please note: At this time, there are NO ENCAMPMENTS in Zapatista territory.
