This social peril has worsened in Mexico during the last six presidential terms, with failed security policies and policies to combat organized crime, which have failed to guarantee the rights to life and social peace. On the contrary, they have exacerbated violence in the country. This has been the result of militaristic logic implemented by the government through the increased use of the armed forces, which puts human rights at risk.
Hacked Sedena documents reveal that an arms supplier for a criminal group had its base of operations in Military Camp 1 in Mexico City, and another near the eighth regiment in Almoloya; they sold grenades for 26,000 pesos and criminals ordered thousands of rounds of ammunition.
The Zapatistas announced their plan to begin a Journey for Life across the globe in autumn 2020. Despite what seemed like insurmountable bureaucratic and logistical obstacles, the first episode of the plan came to fruition with a journey to Europe, Slumil K’axkemk’op, in 2021. As part of that journey, they visited Ireland in October of that year. In this article, Andrea Martinez gives her impressions of that visit.
