Just last June 8, organizations from Mexico and around the world mobilized in 72 different parts of the world to denounce the attacks by the paramilitary group ORCAO on May 22 against Zapatista support base communities. In this attack, which lasted for five days, comrade Jorge López Sántiz was wounded by a bullet, who has serious after-effects due to the fact that his intestine was badly affected.
The mobilizations were the organized response of thousands of people who watch with alarm as the violence against the Zapatista communities and against the peoples of Chiapas and Mexico grows. Our call to stop the war reached many ears and hearts, but not the Mexican State and its political class.
From June 19-22, this paramilitary group continued with the siege of the Zapatista support bases. With the consent or inaction of the three levels of government, they have sought to escalate the war by attacking with firearms in a continuous and coordinated manner in three Zapatista towns: Emiliano Zapata, San Isidro and Moises and Gandhi, located in the municipality of Ocosingo, Chiapas.
The result was more than 800 shots of high and low caliber firearms aimed at houses, schools and autonomous clinics, in addition to the burning of plots of land where the Zapatista support base families work.
Although these aggressions are part of a strategy of paramilitary warfare against the Zapatista movement that dates back to 1994, they are now framed in a context of increasing violence, fomented by the economic crisis in which non-Zapatista towns live; without more resources, dependent and subordinated to the benefits of social programs such as Sembrando Vida. Non-Zapatista peoples find themselves in the need to exchange money for hectares of land, which has led paramilitary organizations like ORCAO to carry out more than 100 attacks from 2019 to date in order to dispossess territories.
In his morning conference on June 23, the head of the federal executive, accompanied by the Secretary of the Interior, the Secretary of National Defense and the Governor of Chiapas, minimized the attacks against Zapatista communities and the serious and widely documented situation in the state of Chiapas. In addition, he launched disqualifying remarks against organizations and individuals who defend the territory, human rights, and organizations that document and denounce the violence.
This attitude not only seems alarming to us, but we are concerned that it could be the preamble to an even greater physical and/or media attack. Minimizing violence encourages paramilitary groups by covering them with a cloak of impunity. The words directed against Samir Flores Soberanes prior to his assassination, a crime that remains unpunished to this day, are engraved in our memory.
Faced with this situation, the undersigned organizations make this call:
- To denounce the violence against the Zapatista communities, against the peoples of Chiapas and Mexico, and to confront the denialism with which impunity is provided to paramilitary groups.
- To summon people of good hearts from all geographies to present written complaints to the Mexican diplomatic representations.
- To accompany, to the extent of the possibilities of each collective and person, the actions that will be announced in the coming days, as well as to organize our own.
We hold the heads of the federal and state governments responsible for the aggressions that the Zapatista communities, human rights organizations, journalists and accompanying solidarity organizations may suffer.
