Member of US Youth Group Writes About Visit to Sendas

Entrance to Sendas

My name is Charlotte and I am part of the group Where There Be Dragons, a gap year travel program focused on language and cultural learning. Our group of 12 visited San Cristobal de Las Casas for just under two weeks and had the pleasure of learning with Schools for Chiapas, and sharing a delicious lunch afterwards in Sendas.

During our activities with Schools for Chiapas, we learned about the history of the state, then about the Zapatista movement, both of which our group knew little about before. We all walked away with new knowledge and inspiration, both about the Zapatista movement and also about San Cristobal and Chiapas.

Afterwards, a few group members pledged themselves to stop drinking Coca Cola after learning about the negative effects the factory has on the waterways and people’s health here. We are also now excited to continue learning about the Zapatista movement even as we transition back into Guatemala.

Sendas is a beautiful center in San Cristobal. It was a joy to admire and learn from the art galleries, as well as the gift shop. Thank you for hosting us, and we wish you the best of luck with your work and vision.
