Planting Trees in Chiapas

Zapatistas planting neem trees

Planting tress is an important and growing priority of the Zapatista Mayan communities  which rely on trees for 100% of their fuel and much of their housing.  In light of these realities, Schools for Chiapas is now cooperating in the creation of tropical tree nurseries, often in association with community-based, indigenous schools.

These exciting new nursery and reforestation efforts provide Mayan communities with medicinal trees such as Neem, fruit trees like coffee and citrus, construction grade bamboo, and other trees native to Chiapas, such as Ramon, Teak and Mahogany.
