Lesson Plans

Zapatista girl coloringSchools for Chiapas believes the richness of contemporary Mayan culture in Chiapas, Mexico offers innumerable teaching opportunities for K-12 classrooms.

Here are some lesson plans related to Chiapas, Mayans and the Zapatista movement – these plans are just the beginning! Please feel free to use them and let us know what you think of the lessons we have made available so far – there’s a feedback sheet provided for this purpose.

We also encourage educators to share teaching suggestions and experiences: in addition, we invite you to send us your own plans and suggestions.  At the moment we even have some funds to pay you for lesson plans related to Chiapas ($100 per lesson plan.)  Click here for a suggested format.

The Lesson Plans themselves span four academic levels:  K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. They are also classified by the following interest areas: literacy, math, social studies, art, science, as well as service learning and school gardens.  As our collection grows, we will offer several automated sorting mechanisms.

These lessons aim to familiarize you and your students with Chiapas, its indigenous peoples and especially the Zapatista movement. The plans feature a strong emphasis on practical application, especially in the school gardens and our service learning programs areas.  More literacy and math lessons are coming soon.  Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.
