The rise in organized crime and violence in Chiapas over the past several years correlates to recent interest of various levels of government in “development,” and simultaneously, systematic militarization of the state. It is in this context that communities resist the destruction to their lands and way of life presented by the incursion San Cristóbal-Palenque superhighway.
