“We call on the community in general to demand climate justice and care for our common home, that we demand—without fear but with respect—our governments and authorities protect the peoples and local communities vulnerable to climate change and threatened by social and ecological conflicts, recognizing their key role in conserving ecosystems and biodiversity.”
More than 3 thousand people, mostly Tseltal, from different municipalities of the north and the jungle, held a pilgrimage in the Bachajón ejido, Chilón, in the framework of the International Day of Indigenous Peoples, to demand “respect for mother earth and the construction of peace”, as well as the suspension of the Palenque-San Cristóbal highway. With 250 people present, members of 60 communities, organizations and networks gathered on July 25, 26 and 27, 2025 in the municipality of Chilón, Chiapas, with the aim of sharing organizational and community experiences in resistance and in the defense of life, water, corn, territory and Mother Earth. They urged a continuation of weaving of resistances, a revaluing of campesino life, the production of food, the defense of seeds and the care of the land.
The declaration makes a resounding call to accompany the August 9th pilgrimage of Pueblo Creyente in opposition to the San Cristobal- Palenque highway.
