Moisés accused current governments of promoting this division by distributing direct aid to citizens in order to perpetuate their hold on power, as the PRI and PAN parties did. He added that building “the commons” is a task envisioned for over 100 years, and only practice will reveal its true results.

The Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) reported that more than a thousand attendees from 40 different regions are present, in addition to 500 Zapatista Indigenous people from various Tseltal, Tsotzil, Ch’ol, Tojolabal, Zoque, Mam, Calchikel, and Mestizo backgrounds.

Accompanied by Captain Marcos and Insurgent Sub-commander Moisés, the writer also elaborated that this phenomenon is repeated even in struggles that did not call themselves socialist, such as those in Haiti, Mexico, and Bolivia, where the people fought to overthrow their enemies, but “from the heart of these struggles, new dominant classes emerge, very similar to those that had apparently been defeated.”

“What we are experiencing today—these severe floods, hurricanes, fires, species loss, heat waves, among others—are the marks of capitalism on the planet.”
