- At Frayba, we have not forgotten, and we continue to fight for truth and justice
On the occasion of the International Day for the Right to the Truth, we honor the memory of the victims and survivors of serious human rights violations in Chiapas, such as in the Northern Zone of Chiapas, where dozens of people were extrajudicially executed and forcibly disappeared during the unresolved internal armed conflict, or in the Los Altos region, where more than 12,000 people were forced to flee their homes due to paramilitary violence; all of them have endured 30 years of impunity and continue to demand truth, justice, and remembrance.
At the Fray Bartolomé de Las Casas Human Rights Center (Frayba), we maintain that Truth, Justice, and Memory are fundamental pillars of the peoples’ struggle, resistance, and hope against impunity. We celebrate the persistence of the mothers, fathers, sisters, daughters, sons, and friends who continue to raise their voices to denounce forced disappearances, extrajudicial executions, torture, and forced displacement—all serious human rights violations made possible by the political violence driven by the Mexican State following the uprising of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN).
We stand in solidarity with those who seek true justice for their loved ones, against the Mexican government’s denial of these crimes. Despite the government’s attempts to downplay the crimes and shield the perpetrators with a cloak of impunity, these individuals have maintained their organization and resistance. We reaffirm that the people’s struggle is rooted in peace, and we remind the Mexican government of its obligation to respect, protect, guarantee, and fully remedy human rights violations.
We call on organized civil society to create its own collective spaces to remember, reconstruct the truth, and strengthen its journey. Because memory is our strength that illuminates the path, keeps alive the dignity of those who struggle and challenge the system, and guides the building of a more dignified life through La Otra Justicia.
We raise our voices and pay tribute to all those who, with courage and dedication, have devoted their lives to promoting and protecting the human rights that were taken from them. With their dignified rage, they challenge the system and pave the way for Truth and Justice to cease being a promise and become a reality.
