Since 1994, Schools for Chiapas has joyfully supported the unique community-controlled schools in the autonomous, indigenous communities of the Zapatista movement. With your support, someday soon, we will again help build Zapatista schools but, due to the Coronavirus, these schools are now closed and we’ve refocused our efforts to help the Mayan communities that are struggling survive Covid-19. But you can help!
On March 16, 2020, the Zapatistas published a statement that, due to Covid-19, they were closing all their centers in order to “follow the necessary scientifically-based sanitary measures that will allow us to survive this pandemic.” Today all Zapatista facilities including schools, offices, meeting places (caracoles), and agroecology Food Forests are temporarily closed. In their final words, as they went into deep quarantine because of Covid-19, the Zapatistas said we “call on all not to lose human contact, but rather to temporarily change our forms of relations as compañeras, compañeros, compañeroas, sisters, brothers, and hermanoas. (transgendered ones)” In that same letter, our Mayan friends recommended we “sustain the struggle against femicides and violence against women; to continue the struggle in defense of territory and Mother Earth; to maintain the struggle for the disappeared, murdered, and imprisoned; and to hold high the flag of struggle for humanity.”
These emotive words motivated a small group of us at Schools for Chiapas to take action to support the Zapatistas as they battle the Corona Virus. In order to “hold onto our humanity” and “hold high the flag of struggle for humanity”; we pledged to raise ONE MILLION PESOS for the Zapatista Healthcare System in their battle against Covid-19. The response was wonderful and, in April 2020, we reached that first goal of $N 1,000,000 Mexican pesos (about $45,000 usd). At that time, we rededicated ourselves to raising $N 2,000,000 pesos (about $90,000 usd) by September 1, 2020. Please volunteer to help and donate if you can. The difficulties and expenses of recovering from Covid-19 in the Zapatista communities of Chiapas will long-term and difficult – the Sixth Campaign of the Zapatistas has encouraged us to “keep our promotions in place” to continue raising funds to fight the Corona Virus.
Following the uprising in 1994, the Zapatistas built their own hospitals, schools, and agroecology centers without government or corporate support. Yet now Covid-19 has forced them to close the autonomous schools and hospitals and the Mayan people still face pervasive racist violence and discrimination from the Mexican government every day. The Corona Virus pandemic throws the injustices facing indigenous people into high relief. It is obvious that the Mexican government has abandoned the Mayan people ~ leaving them without access to modern health care, vastly inferior education, and horrific repression from murderous government and civilian forces. Because of these extremely difficult situations, re-opening Zapatista hospitals, schools and ecological centers is going to be extraordinarily expensive and challenging ~ and will necessarily take place over an extended period of time. We seek support from people of conscience like yourself to help Zapatista communities in Chiapas survive. There are oceans of needs in Chiapas for things like personal protective equipment (gloves, masks, and hospital gowns) to keep Zapatista health workers healthy; there is also a pressing need for soap and hand sanitizer; patent (commercial) medicines and even herbal cures are urgently lacking; corn and beans are already in short supply. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the Zapatistas need access to the best scientific information, and the latest medical treatment protocols, as they plan the best ways to re-open their communities. The recovery from Covid-19 will not be easy or fast, but you can help in many ways. Please join us today.
The grinding poverty facing the Zapatistas means that climate change is already causing real hunger Zapatista communities and it is threating the long-term food security of the hundreds of thousands of small farmers who make up the Zapatista movement. Escuelas para Chiapas / Escuelas para Chiapas
Querido amigo,
Únase a nosotros para ayudar a los zapatistas a sobrevivir la actual pandemia del Virus Corona en Chiapas.
Desde 1994, Escuelas para Chiapas ha apoyado con alegría las escuelas únicas controladas por la comunidad en las comunidades autónomas e indígenas del movimiento zapatista. Con su apoyo, algún día pronto, nuevamente ayudaremos a construir escuelas zapatistas, pero, debido al Virus Corona, estas escuelas ahora están cerradas y hemos reenfocado nuestros esfuerzos para ayudar a las comunidades mayas que luchan por sobrevivir a Covid-19.
El 16 de marzo de 2020, los zapatistas publicaron una declaración de que, debido a Covid-19, estaban cerrando todos sus centros para “seguir las medidas sanitarias necesarias con base científica que nos permitirán sobrevivir a esta pandemia”. En la actualidad, todas las instalaciones zapatistas, incluidas escuelas, oficinas, lugares de reunión (caracoles) y agroecología, bosques alimentarios están temporalmente cerradas. En sus palabras finales, cuando entraron en cuarentena profunda debido a Covid-19, los zapatistas dijeron que “pedimos a todos que no pierdan el contacto humano, sino que cambien temporalmente nuestras formas de relaciones como compañeras, compañeros, compañeros, hermanas, hermanos y hermanosas. (transgénero)” En esa misma carta, nuestros amigos mayas recomendaron que “sostengamos la lucha contra los feminicidios y la violencia contra las mujeres; continuar la lucha en defensa del territorio y la Madre Tierra; para mantener la lucha por los desaparecidos, asesinados y encarcelados; y sostener en alto la bandera de lucha por la humanidad “.
Estas emotivas palabras motivaron a un pequeño grupo de nosotros en las Escuelas de Chiapas a tomar medidas para apoyar a los zapatistas mientras luchan contra el Virus Corona. Para “aferrarse a nuestra humanidad” y “sostener en alto la bandera de lucha por la humanidad”; Nos comprometimos a recaudar UN MILLÓN DE PESOS para el Sistema de Salud Zapatista en su batalla contra Covid-19. La respuesta fue maravillosa y, en abril de 2020, alcanzamos la primera meta de $N 1,000,000 de pesos mexicanos (alrededor de $ 45,000 usd). En ese momento, nos dedicamos nuevamente a recaudar $N 2,000,000 de pesos (alrededor de $ 90,000 usd) antes del 1 de septiembre de 2020. Debido a estas situaciones extremadamente difíciles, la reapertura de hospitales, escuelas y centros ecológicos zapatistas será extraordinariamente costosa y desafiante, y necesariamente tendrá lugar durante un período prolongado de tiempo. Únase a nosotros a largo plazo.
Buscamos el apoyo de personas de conciencia como usted para ayudar a las comunidades zapatistas en Chiapas a sobrevivir. Hay océanos de necesidad en Chiapas de cosas como equipos de protección personal (guantes, máscaras y batas de hospital) para mantener sanos a los trabajadores de salud zapatistas; también existe una necesidad apremiante de jabón y desinfectante para manos; urgentemente faltan medicamentos (comerciales) patentados e incluso curas a base de hierbas; El maíz y los frijoles ya son escasos. Finalmente, y quizás lo más importante, los zapatistas necesitan con urgencia acceso a la mejor información científica y los últimos protocolos de tratamiento médico, ya que planean las mejores maneras de reabrir sus comunidades. La pobreza extrema que enfrentan los zapatistas significa que el cambio climático ya está causando hambre real a las comunidades zapatistas y está amenazando la seguridad alimentaria a largo plazo de los cientos de miles de pequeños agricultores que conforman el movimiento zapatista.
