National Guard raids EZLN support base community

With the excuse of verifying a complaint about the existence of “pirate” radio antennas, a convoy of the National Guard (GN), with fifty troops, raided the support base community of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) located in the Huitepec hill, in San Cristóbal de Las Casas.

According to the residents’ report, the soldiers arrived in the community aboard five artillery units, went to some of the houses, and detained a resident.

Inhabitants of the community, inhabited by indigenous Tsotsiles, gathered on the main street of the town, and questioned the military about the incursion and the detention of the villager.

They cut them off and demanded that they hand over the detainee. They remained there until around 5 p.m. when they were allowed to leave the community.

Official sources confirmed that the troops paid a fine to the community for having entered without authorization. With the soldiers were four workers from the Secretariat of Communications and Transportation.
