Farewell Ramona

Peter Brown

Marcos walks with Ramona to the helicopter which will fly her to Mexico City from the Zapatista community of La Realidad, Chiapas, Mexico.

Schools For Chiapas coordinator Peter Brown had the honor of being present at the burial of Comandanta Ramona in January, 2006, days after her passing on January 6. Here he writes of the legacy of an amazing Zapatista leader and beacon for people everywhere who struggle for dignity, democracy and justice. “During her life” –writes Peter– “Ramona shone as brightly as that corn seed which decorates the houses of the Tzotziles.”
