Communiqué: Voices from the Jungle, Subcomandante Marcos and Culture by Elena Poniatowska

Elena Poniatowska is one of Mexico’s best known journalists and authors, considered to be “Mexico’s grande dame of letters”. Her best known work is La noche de Tlatelolco (The night of Tlatelolco, the English translation was titled “Massacre in Mexico”) about the repression of the 1968 student protests in Mexico City. In this marvellous 1995 essay, she writes with great eloquence about the language used by Marcos, and the impact the Zapatistas have had on women and the poor.
