Schools for Chiapas produced the video “Galeano Vive! Painting a Zapatista Teacher” as a way of honoring the fallen teacher and also as a tool for teaching and organizing. The 13 minute video is now available online for free use by teachers, activists, and people-of-conscience everywhere. Watch now:
More than a year has passed since the assassination of Galeano, and his life of struggle and resistance is increasingly known around the globe. At least 40 screenings of the video (both public and private) in Greece, Turkey, Australia, England, Ireland, Uruguay, United States, Mexico, Japan, Trinidad and Tobago, and other countries were held on Mexican Independence Day, September 16, 2015.
Whether it was in a classroom, community or social center, bar, coffee shop, or someone’s living room, we believe that the Zapatista’s message of “Justice and Not Revenge” will continue to spread across the world. We also like to think that these “intergalactic screenings” are a humble way of remembering the inspiring life of the Zapatista teacher Galeano while reflecting on the role of art in resistance. Photos and descriptions of video showing will be shared directly with the Good Government Board and Galeano’s family in La Realidad at the end of 2015, so be sure to send us your reactions and experiences to the using this video!
Reading the accounts of people who participated or organized a screening of the film “Galeano Vive!” is heart-warming. This message was sent to us from Turkey:
“The fascist attacks against the Kurdish people… made us thought about whether it is a suitable time or not for the screening. We were focused on the attacks and every day we were hoping that we do not get any news of another murdered person-child, especially in Cizre. But just on Sunday we thought that especially these days we need some hope—thinking/speaking about Zapatistas and watching this video will bring us hope! Hope about the possibility of another world.”
And in Mohawk Valley Freedom School, in the United States, they also had a screening with a particular outcome:
“In addition to the call sent out for supporters around the world to show the film, and keeping true to the Zapatista spirit of organization and action, another call was sent out for people to also take some form of action to honor Galeano. Martyred labor activist, songwriter, and member of the radical union the Industrial Workers of the World Joe Hill put this sentiment best before his execution in Utah over trumped up murder charges when he told fellow activists, workers, and agitators, “Don’t mourn, organize.”
Members of the Freedom School will do their part to honor Galeano by working with the community to paint their very own “People’s History of Utica” mural which is in its initial planning stage.”
There is a common thread running through these messages: as the war against humanity deepens and creates all kinds of suffering, we need more ways to exchange ideas about how to end oppression and take action. It is time to write, paint, sing, film, and share “People´s history”everywhere. It is necessary to sow hope, to cultivate a new and better world where many worlds fit.
From rural South England, the Dorset Chiapas Solidarity Group told us about the exchange of ideas they had after the screening, with a particular focus on the difference between charity and solidarity:
“The main focus of the discussion was the huge issue of dispossession and the sharing of our struggles against the different forms it takes. It was particularly good to have Galeano’s own words about this. We also found the video very useful in working through issues that have troubled us for many years in relation to the difference between charity and solidarity… These are issues we face in our daily work.”

The Teach Chiapas Video Series is a free, online series of short videos that come with lesson plans and study guides and bilingual (English/Spanish) transcripts to help structure classroom discussions and activities. Hoy es la premier en línea del último video en nuestra serie “Enseñando Chiapas”: “¡Galeano Vive! Pintando al maestro Zapatista.”
Escuelas para Chiapas produjo el video “¡Galeano Vive! Pintando al maestro Zapatista” como una forma de honrar su vida y también como una herramienta educativa y organizativa.
El nuevo video educativo “¡Galeano Vive! Pintando al Maestro Zapatista” está disponible en línea para ser usado por maestros, activistas y cualquiera que quiera hacer caminar la palabra zapatista en cualquier lugar del mundo. Acá puedes ver el video que tiene una duración de 13 minutos:
Después del estreno intergaláctico de este video, esperamos que el video siga siendo difundido y usado en muchos lugares.
Gente en Grecia, Turquía, Australia, Inglaterra, Uruguay, Estados Unidos, México, Japón, Sudáfrica, Nicaragua, Trinidad y Tobago y muchos otros países celebraron el Día de la Independencia Mexicana con esperanza y en resistencia. Más de 40 proyecciones (entre públicas y privadas) se llevaron a cabo el 16 de Septiembre de 2015. Sin importar si la proyección fue en salones de clase, centros sociales o comunitarios, bares, cafeterías o la sala de alguien, pensamos que el mensaje Zapatusta de “Justicia y No Venganza” continuará esparciéndose por el mundo. Pensamos que esta proyección “intergaláctica” es una forma humilde de recordar la vida ejemplar del maestro zapatista Galeano y también reflexionar sobre el papel del arte en la resistencia.
Leer las reflexiones que nos ha enviado la gente que participó en las proyecciones intergalácticas resulta inspirador. Aquí un fragmento que nos llega desde Turquía:
“Los ataques fascistas contra el pueblo Kurdo…nos hicieron pensar que tal vez éste no era un buen momento para la proyección. Toda nuestra atención estaba puesta en los ataques y todos los días esperábamos ya no recibir más noticias de algún otro niño o persona muerta, especialmente en Cizre. Pero entonces el domingo pensamos que justamente lo que necesitamos en estos momentos es esperanza. ¡Pensar y hablar sobre los Zapatistas y mirar este video nos traería esperanza! Esperanza de que exista otro mundo.”
Y en la escuela Mohwak Valley Freedom School, en los Estados Unidos, tuvieron una proyección que animó con un proyecto:
“Además del llamado enviado para la proyección de la película y haciendo honor al espíritu zapatista de organización y acción, también se lanzó una convocatoria para realizar alguna acción para honrar al Maestro Galeano. El sindicalista y cantautor asesinado de la radical “Industrial Workers of the World” expresó este mismo sentimiento antes de ser ejecutado en Utah por un asesinato que no cometió. A sus compañeros trabajadores y camaradas les dijo: “No estén de luto. Organícense.”
Miembros de la Escuela harán su parte para honrar a Galeano trabajando con la comunidad para pintar su propio mural sobre “La historia del pueblo de Utica”. Este mural está en su fase inicial de planeación.”
Hay un hilo conductor en estos mensajes: Así como la guerra contra la humanidad se profundiza y genera todo tipo de sufrimiento, así también tenemos que encontrar más formas de intercambiar nuestras ideas sobre cómo acabar con la opresión y tomar acciones. Es el tiempo de escribir, pintar, cantar, filmar, documentar y compartir “la historia de los pueblos” en todas partes. Es necesario sembrar la esperanza para cultivar un nuevo y mejor mundo donde quepan todos los mundos.
Desde la zona rural del sur de Inglaterra, el colectivo Dorset Chiapas Solidarity Group nos cuenta sobre el intercambio de experiencias que tuvieron después de la proyección, poniendo especial énfasis en la diferencia entre caridad y solidaridad:
“El punto central de la discusión fue el tema enorme del despojo, las diferentes formas que este toma y cómo compartir nuestras luchas contra él. Fue particularmente bueno contar con las palabras del propio Galeano sobre este tema. También pensamos que el video es muy útil cuando hablamos de temas que nos han sido difíciles por muchos años como la diferencia entre caridad y solidaridad. Todos estos son temas que enfrentamos en nuestro trabajo cotidiano.”
¿Cuáles crees que serán las reflexiones que surgirán después de ver el video de tu propio colectivo, grupo de solidaridad, sindicato, escuela, familia o grupo de amigos? Queremos alentar el uso de este video (y de los otros videos de nuestra serie “Enseñando Chiapas”) para fortalecer el trabajo tanto de educadores como de activistas. La serie “Enseñando Chiapas” está formada por videos cortos que incluyen guías para clase y de estudio, así como guiones bilingües (Inglés/Español) que pueden ayudar a estructurar la discusión en clase y las actividades. También pueden ser utilizados como una introducción en distintos tipos de eventos o acciones sobre Zapatismo, México, luchas autonómicas, formas distintas de entender el poder o luchas sociales en general.
