Mexico City | Desinformémonos. Amnesty International pointed out that the report delivered by Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) on the Ayotzinapa Case, in which he exculpates the army of its participation in the disappearance of the 43 normalistas, “represents a step backwards in the clarification of the case.”
“If they have nothing to hide, why do they refuse to hand over crucial documents?” the organization questioned on its social networks.
Last July 20, AMLO’s report was disseminated, in which the president assures that “absolutely nothing” has been found about the role of the army in the Ayotzinapa Case, despite the fact that the reports of the Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts (GIEI) confirmed its direct participation in the crime and in hindering the investigations.
Below is the full statement:
The Mexican Executive’s report on Ayotzinapa this July 8 represents a step backwards in the clarification of the case, by affirming that there is no evidence of the army’s involvement. If they have nothing to hide, why do they refuse to hand over crucial documents?
For almost ten years, the families of the students and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) have demanded an end to impunity and pushed for independent technical support from regional and international mechanisms, which was crucial to allow progress in the investigations.
We demand an end to the stigmatization of CSOs that support the families. The State has the obligation to carry out an effective investigation that guarantees the families their rights to truth, justice and reparations.
The Mexican State must put the families of the victims at the center and take action to put an end to ten years of impunity that translates into pain and mourning that does not end for the families.
